Quantum of Solace

“So did you see James Bond or Jason Bourne?” my brother asked as soon as I broke the news to him that I have watched the movie in theatre on the very first day.
“Well!!” I said “It’s more like a Bourne movie than a Bond movie.”
“I know. Read a lot about it. I believe you did not go through the reviews till now.”
“Nope. But I had to watch it. It’s a Bond movie after all.”
“I’ll watch it too. Don’t know when though.” And then we moved on to discussing other things.

Over the years an aura has been created around the most famous spy character created by Ian Fleming. He is associated with style, disarming charm; he is flanked with beautiful women; he is sharp-witted glamorous guy who has saved the world umpteenth times and has liking for adrenaline pumping action. Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan immortalized this image and then came Daniel Craig in the new ‘closer to reality’ avatar in Casino Royale. I loved his portrayal and thus was waiting for the new installment ‘Quantum of Solace’.

The movie begins from where the story finished in Casino Royale. Bond is in quest to track down the organization which was responsible for the death of Vesper, perhaps the only woman he loved ever, in the last movie. The movie begins with a well shot adrenaline pumping car chase sequence through mountainous terrain and it appears to have set tone for the entire movie. Not too long into the movie there is another chase sequence and then you will realize the relevance of the comment of it being more of a ‘Bourne movie’. In his global hunt (let’s face it Bond was Globetrotting in a way) to find that organization Bond comes across a corrupt businessman Dominic Greene who apparently is trying to control the oil in the South American country of Bolivia under the pretext of ecological protection. When his real motives are revealed you almost laugh at the idiocy of the plot (I will not reveal it. Just go and watch). In between you will find some plots regarding the CIA and a dictator trying to claim the country of ‘Bolivia’.

Coming to the Bond girls: Surprisingly the glamour quotient is slightly subdued in this film. Olga Kurylenko plays a revenge seeking tough girl Camille. To tell you the truth she justifies her presence as a Bond girl but in a slightly different way than previous version. Not to leave Bond completely out of his charm on women: an agent is brought into the picture to fill this gap. Gemma Arterton plays this more traditional Bond girl.

And if we are talking of the female characters of a Bond movie, how can we leave out ‘M’. Judi Dench as always played this role with aplomb. She undoubtedly emerges as a woman with steely nerves. One good thing about this movie is that it has tried to depict more of the relation between Bond and ‘M’.

Daniel Craig has performed his role perfectly. It is real and he appears to be an emotionally wrecked person in search of answers to some important questions. And then there are stunts: all of them very well shot to keep the viewer on the edge of the seat. Despite all these there is a sense of disappointment. You miss the suave, sharp-witted, glamorous, womanizer Bond. The director/ screenwriters in their attempt to depict a more real Bond take the fun out of the movie. As my friend commented while coming out of the movie “This Bond lacks humour and style.” I cannot agree more. This Bond is a rather angry, unsentimental killing machine. However, with all action packed sequence this movie will not let you bore but at the end of it you will feel that it could have been any other action film. The charisma of Bond is lacking.

Haan even I thought so ...... But I think that they want to use it as a trump for the next venture... :)

Don't you feel the villains in the last two films are weak ??

i liked this one, though for their acting prowess, but script should have developed their character more, this one more so...

well if it indeed is a bourne movie rather than a bond one ...then why watch the duplicate ................the boune trilogy offers enough pack to be watched over again
I'm still stuck on Brosnan as Bond . won't be able to watch this one --exams you know :( .But , many reviews have said what you said "it's more like a bourne movie" why even the trademark bond tannaa tannnaaa is missing. is that so?

@Rookie
Yaar..... I tried to use all my reasoning to justify this villain but found his entire ambition to be a silly one........ :) .... In maker's attempt to raise current issues they forgot to give the shades required to be a bond villain.... no doubt he is a brilliant actor and that swagger is there but still you find things missing..... :)

@android
Yeah I agree that one could visit Bourne trilogy over and over again yet somehow this movie has its moments and is once watch material to say the least...... :)
Nice that you dropped by my post... :)

@i'll try 2 be truthful
Even I loved his portrayal of Bond... but I liked the realism of Casino Royale as well... :)
The traditional tannaa tannnaaa is there but you find it used in a miserly way
Aur exams ke liye taiyari kar le.. Best of luck...... aur tere xams khatam hone ke baad bhi yeh movie lagi rahegi..... tab man kare to dekh lena..... :)

N here goes ma official "HIII".... :-)
de first picture that comes 2 ma mind when i think of bond is de witty expression of Brosnan n de stylish dialogue "bond...james bond"! Wid all de action, hot gals,sharp shootin dialogues Brosnan movies got imprinted in ma mind set.de new series is really good but De new bond in de makin is yet 2 learn 2 smile, handle gals,rather than restricting himself 2 pulse raising chases n bloody stunts.yeah Craige is good, remind of Timothy Dalton. I would recommend de directors 2 atleast give more dialogues :-) I don't think i'll watch Casino Royale or Quantum fully for a second or third time (i don't exactly remember how many times i've watched brosnan flicks...ten plus im sure)
But one thing has 2 b appreciated
De QUALITY HAS IMPROVED. Bond is more realistic n there's less masala!

Banku and Bhootnath Authorspeak: I was going through my old files when I came across this one. I had written it long back when I saw ‘Bhootnath’ and happily forgot about it. Thus, unfortunately it never saw the Blogworld. This post has taken few potshots on some of the best people I have been with and I know that they won't mind this narration. Now that I am a little busy to write anything of significance this may act as filler. I do not know whether I will ever continue with the narration though. Year 2060: Banku and Bhootnath are sitting on a rooftop staring at the beautiful sky. The vast expanse of sky has them captivated when suddenly Banku is bugged by a childish curiosity. Banku: “Bhootnath, tell me how these stars are formed?” Bhootnath: (Obviously forgetting the reasons behind the formation of stars, fumbled to reply. You can not blame him. He is dead for 30 years and has not opened books since then. And tell me how many living people have any ...
Films of 2008 Part I: My top 10 Some films listed here may not be of Indian origin/ production but are relevant in Indian context. The ordering is in no particular order. You may rearrange them according to your preferences. A Wednesday: This film vents out the frustration of ‘Common Man’. Pitted against each other the two stalwarts of Indian film Industry, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher elevated the movie multifold. Jimmy Shergil shined in a brief role. First time director Neeraj Pandey, weaved an interesting tale into an engaging screenplay. The film had its share of flaws but it was able to highlight the message it wanted to deliver. Jodha Akbar: A magnum opus which could have been a classic was reduced to an above average cinematic experience by the dragging and long screenplay. But the movie had its moments. The sheer chemistry between the lead pair made the love story engaging and endearing. The opulent sets and clothes brought the desired period look. A R Rahma...
Damn Machines Suddenly a message flashed on my computer screen: “Are you the One?” “The one? Which one?” I asked. It was strange for someone to message in green (but considering the growing concern for environment and increasing trend to ‘go green’, I took it as a fad). The screen flashed again “I mean, Are you Shanu?” “Yes.” “Run” “Run. Where? Why?” “This is the problem with you researchers. You ask a lot of irrelevant questions. Run. There is a danger to your life.” “Danger. What kind of danger?” “Is there a need to probe on every thing? Just run.” “But where?” “Again a question. When will your kind learn the lesson? You are wasting time. Run anywhere. Just move out of your office. We will send backup team to protect you.” I left the chair immediately and scanned the floor for my immediate boss. He was nowhere to be seen. I took a deep breath and started to run (Well it was actually a rushed and cautious walk). There was a sense of déjà-vu in the way the entire episode happened. Prob...
